What do student workers do in the library?
Answer
Students provide essential assistance to all departments of the JCC Libraries and play a vital role in ensuring our services are well-maintained and available to all library patrons.
Typical job duties:
- Staff the circulation desk
- Provide high level customer service to all library patrons
- Perform regular circulation/fulfillment tasks
- Shelve and shift materials
- Inventory the collection; search for missing volumes; retrieve library materials
- Maintain routine statistical records
- Assist in the routine marking and processing of library materials
- Assist with opening and closing the library
- Assist with monitoring and securing the library
- Assist with the mending of old and worn books and other materials
- Perform a variety of clerical duties
- Other duties as assigned
In addition, our student assistants have the opportunity to learn to use the library and its resources more effectively and to enhance their research skills. You will also develop many “real world” work skills, such as time management, conflict resolution, and balancing priorities, that will help you succeed in your future endeavors.
Required qualifications:
- Have excellent attendance
- Have customer service experience
- Be detail oriented
- Able to communicate and explain complex procedures clearly, both in person and over the phone
- Required to work during finals week and on holidays/breaks when the JCC Libraries are open
- Able to work a minimum of 10 hours per week (limited to work no more than 15 hours per week for all campus jobs)
- Able to work independently
- Able to work a minimum of two consecutive semesters
