What is the Chautauqua Room?

Answer

In 1987 the Chautauqua Room was established in the Hultquist Library to house a special collection made up of local history materials and the Scandinavian Studies collection.  This room serves a dual purpose; it is a depository for these collections and a meeting room for small college groups that seek a quiet place away from other college activities.

The Scandinavian Studies collection started with a nucleus of books donated by Lorimer Moe, a Jamestown native who was a foreign correspondent in Sweden for many years.  More books on this subject were given to the library in memory of JCC’s Swedish instructor Sophia Ansley.  Since then, this collection has grown to over 800 books, magazines, and videotapes covering all phases of Scandinavian and Scandinavian-American life, thanks to generous funding by the Scandinavian Studies Committee of the JCC Foundation and to the many donations of books and artifacts by the members of the American Scandinavian Heritage Foundation.
